Have you notice some small vertical cracks appearing on your front teeth? Don’t worry, you are not alone.

These common cracks are called superficial enamel cracks, also known as craze lines. Craze lines are shallow micro fractures that only impact the outer enamel. They can occur on the front and back teeth but are more noticeable on the front teeth and can be quite unsettling when you first notice them. Craze lines are very common in adult teeth and are typically cause no pain. They are usually only a cosmetic concern as they start to build up staining in the small crack.

Craze lines are generally caused by years of chewing and regular wear and tear of teeth. Unfortunately, craze lines may happen naturally as you get older. Some studies have connected their occurrence with other habits or conditions like biting nails or bruxism. Bruxism is the grinding, gnashing, or clenching of teeth. This can cause many problems, including the wearing down of enamel, and enamel damage. Addressing this issue can help ensure you don’t get any more craze lines. For instance, using a night guard can prevent you from grinding your teeth at night.

There are typically no symptoms with craze lines. Treatment can be for aesthetic reasons only and the prognosis is usually very good.

What can be done?

If the appearance of your craze lines are bothering you as they becoming more obvious as staining builds up, one solution could be an in-clinic whitening treatment. Teeth bleaching will help to remove the stain from within the shallow crack, therefore drawing less attention to it.

Another option could be veneers. Veneers can restore chips, cracks, or an uneven appearance and make your teeth look youthful again. Your dentist can help to determine if this is a suitable option for you.
