Are electric toothbrushes really that much better than a manual toothbrush?
My answer is yes! Iv been saying it for as long as iv been in the industry, as I see anecdotal evidence of this everyday … but now a recent ground-breaking study that took 11 years to complete has confirmed the effectiveness of electric toothbrushes.
In short, scientists conducting this research found that people who use an electric toothbrush have healthier gums, less tooth decay and also keep their teeth for longer, compared with those who use a manual toothbrush. If you would like to read the full version of the cohort study click here.
Here are my top 5 reasons why I recommend using an electric toothbrush.
- The rate at which the head of an electric toothbrush oscillates is far superior to what we can do with our hand during manual toothbrush. This results in better plaque removal.
- Electric toothbrush heads only come in soft or extra soft bristles. You don’t have the option of medium or hard bristles, and therefore reducing the chance of toothbrush abrasion.
- People tend not to apply too much pressure when brushing with an electric toothbrush compared to when using a manual toothbrush. This is because if you apply to much pressure with an electric toothbrush you hear the change in the motor and head, therefore becoming more aware of your technique. Some of the fancier electric toothbrushes even come with pressure sensors.
- They have a smaller head – this helps to get around the back of the back teeth, and in all the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.
- Nowadays mostly all electric toothbrushes come with a built in 2-minute timer – so no cheeky quick 30 second scrub that doesn’t do your mouth any justice!!
All these factors help towards more effective cleaning, which in turn reduces decay, gum disease, and bad breath. But also, don’t forget to floss!!!
My favorite entry level electric toothbrush (and this is what I use at home) is the Oral B – Pro 100
